Case Study- "Country Lovers"

Good afternoon, my name is Detective Ally. There have been no new desirable cases here at the office so I decided to go through some old case files. I searched and searched until... Ah ha! I found a case that was never truly solved. The accused: Paulus, the accuser the state, witness: Thebedi. Her testimony does not match up between the hearing and the court case. There's something amiss and its up to me to find out what it is!

I read the secretary's report and found that at the pre-court hearing, the witness Thebedi had an emotional breakdown and immediately shouted that Paulus had gone into the house by himself and had poisoned the baby. The strange thing is... at court she was completely calm and states that he did go inside the house to see the baby but she did not actually see him do anything. Says here, that the honorable judge found the defendant not guilty due to lack of evidence. As I read on, I found that Thebedi and Paulus had a relationship as children and there were reports at the time of them running off places together (were they accomplices?). There are many scenarios and its up to me Detective Ally to find out, which one actually took place and who did the crime and got away without doing the time.

After an internal debate as to what my next course of action would be, I decided to pay a visit to the "unreliable witness," Thebedi who still lives in town to this day. I came over, told her where I was from and what my interests were and she politely showed me in. It has been 10 years since this case was closed and from the looks of it she really didn't want talk about it but that goes without saying for every aspect of this job. I asked her a series of general questions and she only answered with either a simple yes or no under her breath until I got to the big question. What did you observe happen from the time Paulus entered your home to the time he exited? She flinched in her chair and tilted her head downward. I knew she was hiding something. So I pressed on until she broke down and I almost felt bad for her. She began to cry and at the set time describe what really happened. She explained that the baby was Paulus's and they had had a "thing" going on until that point. He came to the house one day and just went straight in. She heard a few sounds of tiny movement (the baby), a short breath and then silence. After a short while Paulus came out of the house with tears beginning to form out of the corner of his eyes as he tramped away, but as he did she noticed what looked to be like a tiny flask in the fist of his hand and without saying we both know that Paulus had given poison to the baby. She then defended herself and gave the reasons for her behavior at the trial about how they were together and she had feelings for Paulus and understood where he was coming from and why he did it. There
