Effective Communication

Effective communication is a very important value in the health care industry. It will help us better understand one another and its situation, it will help us resolve our differences, build trust and respect and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish ("Helpguide",n.d). When you provide quality interpersonal relationships in a health care setting it can be very comforting to the patients, it brings familiarity to a stressful situation, and ensure the patient that they are receiving the best care and consideration. Working in the health care field it is important to understand the essential needs of patients and how you can support them. When industries seek health care is during a time of stress. When they are at the most vulnerable moment, approaching situations with the common goal of integrity to every individual can lead to successful care for patients.

Effective communication in the health care field can only be achieved by successfully building interpersonal relationship with physicians, staff and patients. Effective communication needs to be done in all levels of management, to patient care and billing. Having successful interpersonal relationship will help you have a prosperous business but it will also help you gain patient satisfaction, which is the ultimate goal in the health care field.

Many of us have experienced the vibe in an office when you walk in you can then notice the way employees conduct their business and the type of atmosphere you are in. Sometimes, with the employees attitude, whether it will be nice or not you can then perceive the type of atmosphere you are in. That is why is so important to have a good form of communication. A supportive climate of communication has description, problem orientation, spontaneity, empathy, equality, and provisionalism. Description refers to the messages that explain your feelings, reactions, and your needs to others. Problem orientation is a point of view that you share with someone else that indicates that "we" have a problem and that a solution can be found. Spontaneity is a natural way of communicating with honesty and openness. Empathy deals with respect, understanding, and acceptance to another person it has to do with you putting yourself in someone else's place. Equality shares a sense of value and mutual respect in regards to power, status, or position. Provisionalism refers to an open mind of ideas and views, trying new behaviors and attitudes and seeking new solution to things. If our physicians and staff utilize effective communication skills our patients will become an educated participant in treatment, therefore increasing our likelihood of compliance.

Assertive communication allows you to share information openly, honestly, and respectfully while allowing others to do the same (Cheesebro, O'conner, & Rios, 2010). Interpersonal approach helps build trust, and helps you and others communicate well to get important needs met. In the healthcare field it is very important to convey an assertive style to deliver the best care possible to the patients. It also comes in handy in a management point of view, it helps when you are de4aling with your staff and other health care employees to ensure proper understanding of situations and job duties that are required. The ability to be assertive is the key in developing a great supportive style of communication.

When I look into my own communication style I see myself being assertive consistently. I am able to voice my own opinions, thoughts, and feelings to others while respecting the right of others to do the same. I can talk almost to anyone without being offensive to them. I also respect what others have to say to me without being judgmental on their thoughts about me. Sometimes I know there will be people disagreeing with my opinions but I still say what I have to say in a respectful manner.

Effective interpersonal relationships in the healthcare field provide the patient with comfort during their treatment process. When we accept to work in the health care field we have to accept that we need to care for, respect, and uphold to our highest standards of care for individuals seeking treatment. When we stop and pay attention to each other we can then begin a healing process that will last a lifetime. Once you learn to provide successful care you can also then begin to build prosperous business that will continue to treat, diagnose, and facilitate individuals in their time of need.
