Effective Leadership and Management in Nursing

Successful organizations depend on good leaders and managers: the present healthcare environment requires nurses to manage clinical outcomes for clients and also to take a leadership role in leading organization no objective, balancing patient care, employees 'and physicians at the organization. Interpersonal relationships are paramount to nursing because it is a people oriented profession, with leadership styles that are influenced by humanism. The direction and purpose of the organization can begin with the leadership's mission, attitude and behaviors for health care. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of leadership, delineate the difference between leadership and management, and explain the characteristics of an effective leader.

Leadership and Management

According to Sullivan and Decker," A leader is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish specific goal the leader exerts influence by using a flexible rap groups wall of personnel behaviors and strategy" (2009, p. 45). An effective leader must be able to make people want to accomplish something and to therefore get the work done. Maintaining structure that facilitates and accomplishing the goals that supply necessary information that help provide direction, while clarification and maintaining group satisfaction, and cohesiveness performance. In the present healthcare environment current leadership is even more important, because nurses find themselves collaborating with members of all health care disciplines.

Leadership and management are words that are used interchangeably; however they are not the same. The definition of leadership is setting the direction for change, facilitating practice, ensuring policies are up-to-date and professional standards are set in relationship to care (Feltner, Mitchell, Norris, & Wolfle, 2008). Leadership has a large influence on the processes within an organization; the essence of leadership is the ability to influence others. Leaders establish the purpose of the organization where as managers carry out the big establish purpose (Azaare & Gross, 2011). Management entails the process of planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, staffing, a value waiting, negotiating, and directing the work of employees to accomplish the task at hand. Manager has the authority, responsibility, accountability, and how defined by the organization. A manager job entails: Clarifying the organizational structure, choosing the means by which to achieve goals Assigning and coordinating task, developing and motivating as needed and evaluate outcomes and provide feedback (Sullivan and Decker, 2009).

View of Leadership

Motivating others to achieve a high standard is a vital to leadership. Nursing leaders motivate and encourage improving patient outcomes, thru implementation of further education and evidence-based practice, exceptional nursing care is achieved. Developing a credulous relationship with staff through support, commitment, empathy and actively listening enhances staff willingness to carry out the mission and vision of an organization.
