It only seemed suitable to choose David Ogilvy through my research on “famous person in advertising history” since he is known as the father of advertising. David Ogilvy was born in England on June 23rd, 1911. He attended college, but never received a degree and later emigrated to America in 1938. In 1948, after dabbling in various occupations, he founded an advertising agency in America. This agency eventually became known as Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide and it provides a wide range of marketing communication services. To be successful with his company he believed he needed three components: diversity and quality of the brand, diversity and quality of the people and belief in his brand.
Aside from Ogilvy becoming a founder of an agency, his accomplishments consist of aiding in the growth of widely known brands like, Dove, Kodak, Shell and Barbie- just to name a few. His taglines were used for many of these brands, helping them sell through his creativity. His accomplishments influenced advertising history by making these brands successful and demonstrating how to successfully advertise and sell. Ogilvy stated, “advertising is not an art form, it’s a medium for information, a message for a single purpose: to sell.” He left behind a legacy which continues to hold his name and grow to this day. I think he is a brilliant entrepreneur that had a knack for knowing how to reach people and knew of a process that he created to advertise and build brands.
