Final project
For your final project you will write a 1,800-word paper on an opera that we haven't discussed in class.
Your choices are:
1) Mozart, Don Giovanni
2) Puccini, Tosca
3) Saint-Saëns, Samson et Dalila
4) Beethoven, Fidelio
5) Berg, Lulu
If you would like to write on another opera, send me an email to discuss it by November 14.
In your paper, you must:
1) Open with a statement paragraph (150 words)
2) BRIEFLY summarize the plot (150 words)
3) Discuss THOROUGHLY the main issues of the opera as they may relate to gender, social class, politics, sex, family relations, religion, colonialism or exoticism (not all of these will be present necessarily) (750 words)
4) Imagine that you are directing a production of this opera. What decisions would you make regarding time frame, costumes, sets, stage movement of the singers, etc. in order to highlight the issues that you discussed above? Describe your production. (750 words)
Submit your essay by email (leonora.saavedra@ucr.edu) by Wednesday, December 7 at 5 pm .
Videos and CDs are in the Music Library. Ask for them (some DVDs might be on reserve for MUS 003).
