Final Reflection Paper; Home
As my first semester at Babson College is coming to an end, I’m in complete disbelief. To think that I travelled 8,122 miles, 3 months and 11 days to get to this point in my life is mind-boggling. It seems like it was only yesterday that I was standing at Park Manor South, waving to my family and shedding some tears. At that moment, I had begun a new journey, a new chapter, a new family, and a new home.
During my first semester at Babson, I faced a few challenges. First off, there was an undertone of a culture shock throughout these four months. I could not keep up with the topics my peers were talking about, or did not know certain ‘slang’ words they used, making it hard for me to be involved in a conversation! But now, I embrace my diversity rather than feeling out of place at times. I cherish my culture and display it out in the open because my roots make up who I am, here at Babson. Another challenge I faced was the weather! I come from a very warm city in India, and facing below-freezing temperatures definitely is not my cup of tea. I am used to it now though and am looking forward to Boston’s first snow fall! Another challenge I have faced at Babson is homesickness. I have never been away from my family for more than six weeks! Day by day, Babson has started to morph into exactly what I miss so much – home.
I came into college with a mindset that everything is going to be nerve-wracking, scary and overwhelming. While all of this is true, a sense of familiarity is starting to captivate me. I am getting used to the Babson culture, American culture and in some ways, I am living the dream. I have stepped out of my comfort zone, spread my wings and taken my first step to success.
I have involved myself into several activities on campus and some of them have turned out to be great successes. To begin with, I applied to be in the Campus Activities Board as I have a certain affinity for event management. Instead of being a general member, I took a shot in the dark and applied to be a CAB Ambassador. As I had hoped, I got the position! Next, I applied to be on the Babson Accounting Alumni Association, and again, I got through! Third, I am part of the South-East Asian association called AMAN. Within this club, I applied to be a Marketing Liaison and I got the position! I participated in the annual Fall Show and it was a brilliant experience because I made several new friends and had a wonderful time connecting with my roots again. Finally, my major success here at Babson is my FME business. I was elected as CEO of my business called Caked! All the hard work that I had put in throughout the semester finally paid off because Caked went on through the Launch phase of FME. A culmination of all these little things has made my extra-curricular experience at Babson simply amazing.
Apart from activities, I have seen that I am extremely motivated
