How Hawaii Became a State

For my expository essay I have chosen to write on How Hawaii became a state. I will list some facts about Hawaii's history. The data that I will write about is of importance to Hawaii as a state. Hawaii attained statehood when Congress introduced the Hawaii an Admission Act so that everyone could vote to make it an official state.

Hawaii has many lovely islands which capture the imagination of many travelers and tourists who vacation there. Hawaii is very beautiful. It has many pleasing assets for travelers. Some include, rainforest, volcanoes which have great views and are right on the ocean. Hawaii also has many mountains. The Hawaiian Islands are the tops of the largest mountain range in the whole world. Hawaii is often described by many as a tropical paradise. My family and I have visited there and can attest to its beauty. The state has beautiful waterfalls and amazing sandy beaches. The scenery alone is enough to make anyone want to visit Hawaii.

When news spread of the islands being discovered and the rich resources it held all of the "major world powers were interested, sending envoys and missionaries to the monarchy which controlled the islands" (Carver, n.d.). The islands also had a lengthy history as a kingdom with a well established royal family.

Many threats came through and the king of the time, King Kamahama the third, tried to get rid of all interference from a few of the countries. Eventually in 1887 the United States was granted permission to place a military base on the island of Oahu. In 1893 the monarchy was overthrown by the United States even though Queen Liliuokalani, tried to reinstate the monarchy by was unsuccessful.

After this took place Hawaii became a republic and was promised protection from United States. In 1898 Hawaii became part of the United States territory. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 it was 18 years later that Congress would introduce the Hawaii Admission Act which would be approved by the senate
