Slide 1: Introduce yourself and the topic, The Power of Self-Marketing.

Slide 2: Have you ever wondered why a mediocre presentation would be perceived as better than an excellent one? Name recognition is the key! When we recognize a name and have a positive association it, we perceive whatever that person has done in a positive light. We want to view that person as successful. You can be the person that others recognize and perceive as positive and successful.

Slide 3: In the book, Self-Marketing Power: Branding yourself as a Business of One by Jeff Beals, eight rules for achieving name recognition are discussed.

The first rule is positive thinking. For success, it is important to begin self-marketing with a positive attitude, a belief that you will be successful. Possessing a "can do" attitude; will lead to the optimism that it will take for the motivation to keep striving towards your goals.

The second rule is developing an expertise. An expertise will allow you to focus on marketing efforts within a specific topic. It will also give you legitimacy and make you someone people seek out for information.

Slide 4: Rule three is be prepared. Follow that great Boy Scout motto, "be prepared"; you never know when an opportunity will arise. If we are well prepared, when opportunity arises, we will be ready.

Rule four is the right attitude. We have heard the phrase attitude is everything; your attitude impacts your thinking. Constant hard work will prepare you to promote yourself when the opportunity presents itself. Roll with the punches, good does not follow successful people around; a successful person chooses to take the good from a situation and forget about the bad.

Slide 5: Rule five is everyone counts. Be careful not to discriminate against anyone you do not perceive as important; everyone is important and has something to offer. For example, the secretary of the person you are meeting with could have an impact on the outcome of your meeting. Your next opportunity could come from the most unexpected source.

Rule six is you are being watched. Always stay in your professional character; what you do when you think no one is watching may impact your career. Social media sites are an example of this. In today's business world, the internet should not be ignored, use the resources of the internet to promote yourself. Maintain your professionalism at all times.
