State Bank of India

Founded: 1955 (erstwhile Imperial Bank of India)

Brief Description of Problem

Details of all stakeholders:

1. IBA (Bank top Management)

Indian Banks' Association (IBA), formed on 26 September 1946 as a representative body of management of banking in India operating in India - an association of Indian banks and financial institutions based in Mumbai. With an initial membership representing 22 banks in India in 1946, IBA currently represents 237 banking companies operating in India.

2. UFBU (United Forum of Bank Unions)

United Forum of Bank Unions, is an umbrella of nine unions . UFBU comprises of All India Bank Employees Association, (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), Indian National Bank Employees Congress (INBEC), Indian National Bank Officers Congress (INBOC), National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) and National Organisation of Bank Officers (NOBO).

3. Government of India

4. Other Public Sector Banks

Exact nature of conflicts

1. Wage

-Reluctance of Bank Top Management to give substantial pay rise

Offer of a 2% raise due to stressed bank balance sheets

-6th pay commission vs last bank bipartite settlement

comparision of the pay hike in the last wage revisions

-7th pay commission vs forthcoming bipartite settlement

comparision of  the present pay hike vis a vis inflation

-GoI budget vs SBI balance sheet

Comparing the argument of inability of banks to offer decent wage hikes because of balance sheet vs the Governments fiscal position. Looking at GoI Debt to GDP ratio. Are banks being treated as step sons?

-SBI remuneration vs Private banks

Comparing SBI salaries with Private bank salaries.  The fallacy in the argument: Profit objective is raised when matters of wage revision arex brought up and Social Objective is raised during Government Scheme implementation.

2. Working condition

- Employees committing suicide

Overtime, Work pressure. Are bank officials working any lesser than other Government officers?

  • Demonetization, all government scheme pressure on banking sector

Banks implement many schemes. Demonitisation. Aadhar. PMJDY. APY. Etc etc. Wage revision yet unjustified?
