Re: Reliability of the Computer Driver Shoe Machine Process

As you are aware I was asked by Mr. Dieter Handel to show what the current reliability of the machines were, how to improve reliability and in case of failure back up one of the machines with a machine that will perform with the same reliability.

Since we are 3 individual machines and operators the correct formula to use is Rs. Each machine has its own rate of reliability, which is feasible with the decision analysis tool. The formula is very simple.

We take the output from all three machines and multiply. Then we have our overall rate for all three jobs combined. See the following chart:

|(untitled) Solution |

| |Parallel system 1 |Parallel system 2 |Parallel system 3 |

|Component 1 |.84 |.91 |.99 |

|Prll System Rel |.84 |.91 |.99 |

|Overall Reliability |.7568 | | |

| | | | |

As you can see by the chart, right now the reliability of all three jobs is .7568 or rounded .76

Next I was asked to back up one machine in case the other failures. This is referred to Redundancy. Using this analysis will ensure that if the machine with the lowest reliability breaks down (Job 1), then it will have job 2 to fall back on. The formula is created by (the probability of the first machine breaking don) x (the probability that the backup machine will work) x (the probability of using the second machine) = the sum of the probabilities.

I was asked to show the analysis combined by adding a back up machine. I chose machine 1. This has the lowest probability (.84) which will cause a higher probability in all three machines. See the following chart:
