1. SOCIAL MEDIA

This part is about what social media is, its history and demographics. I will also go over the development of Web 2.0 which made the social media concept possible.

1.1 What is Social Media?

● People mostly think of social networking platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, but it is anything that people interact and share their views and multimedia.

● Can also be blogs, bulletin boards, podcasts, blogs, and wikis.

● Anything where users can participate, create and share content.

Social media is a concept that is the result of technological developments in the last few years. The best way to define social media is to break it down; Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication.

The main types of social networking services are those which contain category places such as former school classmates and ways to connect with friends and a recommendation system based on trust. These sites usually offer self description pages for its users/members. Several other types of social sites are; YouTube style pages where people can share their own recordings or their popular videos. Another type of a social site is Wikipedia or in other terms 'Wikis', where people share informative data by adding the information they have in to the system, this eventually creates a major databank of information to anyone who has connection to the internet. To summarize the term social media we can say it is a way of people being interactive using the technological possibilities of the internet, especially after the development of Web 2.0, which I will mention in section 1.2.

Wikipedia, owned by Wikimedia Foundation and is one of the most popular social networks in the world offered in numerous languages, besides being just a social website it is a major source of information for all web users world wide and it is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free content, and to providing the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public. This also brings up the question of what "wiki" means which I am sure most people do not know; "Wiki" is a website that allows the creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplified markup language or a text editor. Wikis are typically powered by wiki software and are often used jointly by multiple users Wikis could be used for different purposes with various access limitations to its users.

Wikipedia is the most trusted source of knowledge on the web, when social media is researched on Wikipedia the following satisfactory description was placed:

"Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. It is where you people get help and help others. Ask questions or get answers to their questions. Technology, telecommunications, social communication, words, images, audio files are provided via the structure. Also a place where people's stories and experiences are shared."
