One Day by David Nicholls first drew me in, embarrassingly enough, because I liked the song on the movie trailer. The book is told over a span of about 20 years and each chapter takes place on the same day- July 15th. The book is a love story of Emma Morely and Dexter Mayhew. The book begins when the characters are in college, Emma being a hardworking, dreamer who is trying to change the world and Dexter being a popular, wealthy, popular boy. The two form a strange bond that lasts for the rest of their lives. The jumping timeline over the two decades may seem as if it would lack in depth, but Nicholls provides an excellent insight into his characters and makes the book a true page turner. Each chapter being a different year keeps the book flowing and makes it a fast read. I found myself wanting to know more about each year, only to then have to switch to another year, another drama, and another thrill. Staying up until 2am for three days in a row, I finished the book. The story stuck with me for a few days and not normally a fan of "chick" novels, I was pleasantly surprised.

I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a thrilling escape from their lives to enter into the world of Em and Dex. A similar style to Nicholas Sparks, fans of him would also enjoy the style and elegance of David Nicholls. The clever plot of One Day is what lures the reader in. Although Nicholls style is very dramatic, I mostly wanted to know what happened in the end of the story. His style of writing didn't draw me into buying another one of his novels, but I enjoyed the read. I don't plan on reading another novel of his, unless of course, another trailer happens to catch my eye.
