The effects of social media on Hong Kong youth
Social media is a term used to describe the interaction between groups or individuals in which they produce, share, and sometimes exchange ideas over the internet and in virtual communities. Thanks to the rapid growth of internet. It is now easier to access the internet than ever before and that makes social media now an inseparable part of people’s life. Although all generations have come to embrace the changes social media has brought about, the influence of social media on Hong Kong teenagers is of particular importance, they are growing up surrounded by electronic devices and interactive social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, which has made the social media a vital aspect of their life. The following paragraphs will talk about both the positive and negative effects of social media on Hong Kong youths in three aspects: social, education and awareness dimensions.
Social dimension
It is inevitable that Social media make it more convenient for Hong Kong youth to socialize with each other. Social media such as Facebook and Snapchat allow teens to communicate and keep in touch with their friends. It removed all the communication and interaction barriers. Nowadays, there are many Hong Kong student decided to study at foreign college after their public examinations. Those students who were studying aboard can stay connected with their friends without miss a beat through social media. As a result, relationships can be kept and bonds can be strengthened. In addition, teenagers can communicate perception and share their thoughts publicly with others through social media. The progression of communication can be achieved rapidly from various social networking platforms. During the Umbrella Movement in 2014, teens gather meetings and organize protest actions by using Facebook Pages is a great example of how they use the social media to share their thoughts and organize activities.
On the one hand social media seems to bring people connected but on the other hand social media could be damaging the minds of Hong Kong youth by suppressing their physical socializing skills. Teens now spend most of their time communicate via social media instead of face to face interactions. It is not difficult to find out that most teen nowadays are unable to hold a decent conversation without mentioning things they saw on social media.
