Brain Matters

In some brain injuries the longer the brain show the signs of brain damage this is probably how they are going to stay depending on the severity; when someone suffers from head trauma it would be hard to understand what's going on with that persons brain.. In the article of "The Affects of a Brain Injury" by Kimberly Huston and "I want My Brain Back" by Sherri Dalphonse both explain the various affects to brain trauma and provides information on how and why the brain reacts at the time of damage.

Trauma is the most common cause of brain injury. The Brain is fragile and sensitive. Although, the head injury must be assessed to be sure the severity to the brain. There are two assessments; first one is Glasgow Coma Score; that will tell the level of responses to eye movement, speech and body movement. Second assessment is Post traumatic amnesia has a close connection to time. The brain has three different parts that are important. First, temporal lobes is located on either side of the brain, the affect is memory and also to mood and emotions. Second, is occipital lobes located in the back of the brain, the affect is vision. Third, is cerebellum also located in the back of the brain, this affect controls coordination of movement and the voice box muscles? Depending on the part of brain and severity of the injury will tell how long a person will have to recover.

The second article will explain how a 39 year old woman with PhD in economist suddenly can't remember thing or think straight. Anne was on her way home from a friend, when she was hit from behind by an SUV. Both Anne and the other driver of the SUV got out to see the damage. Anne's car had a dent in the back. At the time of the accident she was a little scared but that's all. The next day, June 15, 1997 Anne was trying to help her boss resolve a problem at work; she was not able to comprehend what her boss was saying. Early the morning she work up feeling cold, nauseated and headache. Co-worker explained that she should seek medical attention. She visited her physician, and he told Anne that she had whiplash and wanted to see her every two week. About two weeks later Anne was driving to church, when her arm and leg went numb. Immediately she went to see a Neurologist and he diagnosed her with mild traumatic brain injury. She was going on a month with her brain injury, Anne was struggling. Her bills started to get behind, she'd ware the same cloths every day and she stopped driving. Her doctor told her that she would be fine within six months. Prior to Anne's accident, she was a fun and energetic person. Her Friends didn't connect her behavior to the accident.

Anne is now in the six months of her brain injury, the frontal lobes are where most of the damage is located. For months she had many test done. "I didn't know enough to say, ' I can' do this and I can't do that," says Anne. "Your brain's not working, so you can't process that your brain's not working. You have a brain injury; you think the doctor can see it."

Anne is now going on two years and some answers to her brain injury. Her fathers, friend, gave her a contact to a neuropsychologist, she made an appointment
