Case Study

Throughout our history, there were certain people that made the world became what it is today. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler are two of the most important people during the period of the 1920s. Franklin Roosevelt was born on January 30th, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York. He became the 32nd president of the United States in 1933, and was the only president to be elected four times. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20th, 1889, Braunau am Inn, Australia. He was the leader of the Nazi Party and a dictator of Germany. These two people have many things in common. Both of them were elected in the same year, 1993. Both led their nations to become a world power. They cured a depression and promised to change new ways to better the economy. In the end of their lives, they both died on the same year. Even though Hitler and Roosevelt shared many similarities, they are still different from childhood to their ways of leading the countries, and beliefs.

Let's start off with Roosevelt's and Hitler's childhood. President Roosevelt was like one of those princes in Disney's movies. Coming from a striking family, Roosevelt was the only child of James Roosevelt and Sara Ann Delano Roosevelt. An article entitled "Franklin D. Roosevelt" states that, "The Roosevelts had been prominent for several generations, having made their fortune in real estate and trade" (1). Since Roosevelt was small, he was surrounded by privilege and a sense of egotism. From a young age till the age of 14, Roosevelt was educated by tutors and governess. After attending Groton School, Roosevelt went to Harvard University, and he engaged to Eleanor Roosevelt in his last year at Harvard. After graduating Harvard University, Roosevelt continued his studying at Columbia University Law School. On the other hand, Hitler did not experience a happy and easy life like Roosevelt. When Adolf Hitler was a little child, his father, Alois, was an alcoholic that had trouble holding back is emotions while his mother gave him love and affection. Whenever his father was drunk, he would abuse whoever was in his way. Adolf was usually the one who was abused because his older brother was not living with the family, and Adolf did not obey his father's wishes, for he wanted to become an artist, and his father wanted him to follow his footsteps on becoming a customs officer. In 1907, his mother was suffering and died due to her breast cancer. Hitler left school early; therefore, he did not receive many degrees. "With a mixed record as a student, Hitler never advanced beyond a secondary education," (Adolf Hitler 1).

In addition to their differences during childhoods, Roosevelt and Hitler are different in their ways of leading and treating people. Roosevelt introduced the New Deal, which was a series of economic programs implemented in the United States, in response to the Great Depression of the 1930s.
