Course Project Proposal
ACE USA Insurance Company
ACE provides major organizations with property, casualty, risk-management, and accident and health insurance products and services with the assistance of insurance brokers.
During my employ, I worked in the risk management department as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President of the Southeast region and assisted the VP and other department staff with all administrative requests. Other employees in the department were: an Underwriting Manager, two Assistant Vice Presidents, six underwriters and five Underwriting Assistants.
One major issue I had with ACE was the "factory" mentality that existed. Management never recognized hard work and consistently searched for faults in every subordinate's work. Nepotism fully exists at this organization along with the "good ol' boy" clicks. There was an opening for an Underwriting Assistant and several internal and external candidates were interviewed. But there was one candidate that came in who was an older African-American woman that was a referral of another African-American employee in the department. This woman was the only candidate given a series of tests that were created by one of the Junior Underwriters and was not hired.
The problem that I will be discussing is racism, morale, discrimination and diversity.
This problem can be defined as certain members of management consider themselves to be superior to subordinates of a different race.
African-Americans do not hold very many positions of authority and I have witnessed extreme disrespect coming from managers and directed towards their subordinates. I have also witnessed discrimination towards older employees as well.
Senior management is the problem.
This problem has extended itself into a hostile work environment.
I would say that the racism stems from lack of diversity and proper management training.
