Procedure
1. Take out the vegetable shortening. Make sure it is at room temperature.
(The room temperature should stay the same throughout the entire experiment. The scientist used a room temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, or 21.1 degrees Celsius.)
2. Record the room temperature.
3. Take out the two 9-oz or 453.592 gram cups. Using the spoon, fill one of the cups to the brim with the vegetable shortening. Leave the other cup empty.
4. Take out the two cooking thermometers. Place one of the cooking thermometers in the cup with the shortening. The thermometer should be enclosed in shortening; only the very top should be left uncovered where the temperature is shown. Place the other cooking thermometer in the empty cup.
(Wait for the two thermometers to reach the same temperature. This temperature should be the room temperature.)
5. Take out the paper and pencil and be ready to record data.
6. Set the timer to two minutes. Place the two prepared cups in the same freezer on the same rack and close the fridge door. Start the timer.
7. At the end of the two minutes, open the fridge door and read the temperatures of both cups without disturbing them. Close the fridge door. Do this step quickly or the data will be flawed.
8. Repeat step 7 in two minute increments continuously for thirty minutes. Remember to record temperatures every two minutes. When done with trial one, take out the cups and reset the experiment. Repeat the experiment nine more times for a total of ten trials.
