A psychiatrist is a doctor who prescribes medications, and treats people with mental illnesses, emotional disturbance, and abnormal behavior. A psychiatrist is a special kind of doctor, who deals with problems that are of the mind. A psychiatrist talks to people who society considers insane. Psychiatry is a very rough field to go into. There is major job competition, the hours are long and hard, schooling takes forever, and there is the entire stigma of having to treat insane people. Psychiatrists have more to do than just dealing with people who are emotionally disturbed, but they have to study the effects different medications have on the brain. To become a psychiatrist and the chemistry behind psychiatry is very complicated.

To become a psychiatrist takes years of school. There are so many different types of classes to take in order to become a psychiatrist. In order to get into med school, one must first have a bachelor's degree. When taking classes for a bachelor's degree, it is good to take as many science classes as possible. Organic chemistry, anatomy, physics, and biology are just a few generic science classes an aspiring psychiatrist might want to take. The last year of med school, students can finally do psychotherapy on a real patient under supervision of a licensed professional psychiatrist.

The national average yearly income for psychiatrist is $208,462, and the state average yearly income is $198,500. Psychiatry is definitely a career that pays off, and the job market is pretty good. The unemployment rate for people working in the psychiatrics field is considerably low. The hours are almost always consistent, because of how many patients have to be seen on a regular basis.
