Madison and Dahl

The United States founding father, our fourth President, James Madison was inaugurated on March 4th, 1809. He contributed to the Federalist papers as number 10. He talked about Factions, and how it consists of different groups of people who share the same interests as each other. Madison writes this paper to stand by the new constitution that has established a way of controlling the factions. Madison claimed that factions are inevitable, and that he also doesn't care for them. He stated that as long as the people have different interests then there will always be factions. The two methods he mentioned for “curing the mischiefs of faction” were by removing its causes and controlling its effects. This means that everyone's beliefs must be the same in every aspect such as, opinions, passions, and interests, while stripping every citizen man or woman of their basic liberties. These are both impractical resolutions to a problem that can possibly never be resolved. Thus, it can not be fixed so its under damage control by its creator, the government. Since there is a direct democracy it is easy for large factions to dominate and take control, leaving the weaker factions in the dust. Madison says that good Americans she be put in government to keep the government equal. It's easy for a person running for a position to say that the are going to do something that pertains to a specific interest group then turn it down. He said factions could be better controlled if it was under a representative form of government in a large society rather than in a small society under a popular form of government. Madison claimed with the new constitution that it will create stability and justice with our growing nation. The biggest problem with factions is that it allows unequal distribution of property. People with more ability tend to posses more property than that of people with less of ability. Government should not only protect people who have property but also those who do not. Madison believes in a strong national government, that protects its nations from its enemies.

Robert Dahl, a theorist studied the city of New Haven, Connecticut to see who actually runs the place. He said that in New Haven the upper class wasn't based in the business community and wasn't very involved. The big guns were with the politics, they ran the show. The governor would establish plans and then sell them to the businesses.Urban renewal transformed the city into something great that people thought would be good for the future. Unfortunately lately the hope plummeted due to the increase in poverty in certain areas of New Haven, while other areas strived in wealth.
