"Most people are coming to the website for a major hospital have health-related questions, require immediate need for a doctor, or need information about visiting (directions, visiting hours, etc.)." (Gelberg, 2012) Gelberg continues to say, "Just as hospitals are in the business of patient care, their websites should reflect that same level of care for site visitors." (2012)

According to the article "Is your hospital's website making the right impression?" When it comes to your hospital's website, "People make their first impressions in the first five seconds, and it takes much longer to change that first opinion...and you're not so likely to get a second chance if visitors don't find the information they're seeking." (Wainscot Media, 2011)

Many people have begun venturing online to self-manage their health and are looking for relevant health information to help make decisions. Therefore, a hospital's website should reflect the quality of your hospital, provide key information to site visitors and make it simple and intuitive to find that information. It should also reflect a level of care, professionalism, and respect upon which the hospital has built its reputation. The purpose of this paper is to critique the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic's websites for design and content.

The Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic focuses on timeliness they strive to offer context and perspective on current events but do not compete to be the first and focus more on depth and perspective. Specializing in hard to treat diseases or which have gone undiagnosed, the home page is set up to easily find the subject you are looking for such as disease, symptoms, drugs, test, and healthy living. The homepage also has a section for new and updated information so you can get the current information that is available. The website is kept up-to-date by the medical experts and the web team and contains current links to websites and resources. The website also provides services such as online office visits, secure messages, medical records, upcoming appointments, online bill pay, prescription refills, and registration updates. The Mayo Clinic website has established the company's image very well. The visual design is clean, professional, and easy to read. The website is consistent when moving from one page to the next and is designed to have a window open within a window. The thorough and extensive research Mayo Clinic utilizes is far more reader-friendly than competitors. By putting advertisements on the website would help medical suppliers and also help raise even more funds for the company, which could improve on their revenue flow. As of now Mayo Clinic is ahead of the pack in research, practice, and medicine but they must keep a positive image in order to retain the patients the company has treated. The website is a great source for practical medical questions and advice.
