Negotiation Planning Form

Some reasons why educational support is beneficial to the employer:

·         Benefits begin applying immediately to student and employer.  Relevant and immediately applicable knowledge and skills will be utilized by students beginning in their very first semester.  Relatively small investment of time and/or tuition reimbursement on employer’s part pays big dividends.

·         Company benefits directly from faculty knowledge and experience.  As an executive program, the focus of course work is upon immediate and practical application in the work place.

·         Students are expected to work with their supervisor to determine the topic of inquiry for Projects A and B courses.  Ideally, students will select a topic of immediate concern and apply research/development for company benefit.

·         Participation regarded as employee incentive to support an engaged and motivated workforce.  Students in the program are definitely upping their game and the employer benefits.

·         Participation demonstrates to the employee that their continuing development is valued by the employer.

·         Participation supports employee retention (some employers also have an educational reimbursement policy that requires that students remain with the company for a set period of time after graduation)

·         Cohort-driven program means that participants learn from upcoming leaders across industry, share best practices, see results of direct and immediate application of program learning to individual work challenges and get feedback on results.

·         Greatly enhanced time management skills are a happy by-product of participation

Problem description:

This problem involved asking for education assistance funds that the company provides to its employees.

The company had refused to pay for the program upfront before I joined the program as to qualify for Education Assistance, the Program of Study must be directly relevant to the employee’s current job, or to a reasonably attainable job at Freescale.

Before joining the course, the manager and HR team have to approve of the financial aid. My manager had approved joining the program but could not get approval for the financial assistance from the company.

I had to negotiate with my manager once again after HR did not approve of the aid the last time.

The challenge was to re-open a buried topic and turn in my favour.

[Strategy to re-open a negotiation]

Being on a work visa sponsored by the company

(Include an explicit discussion of your preparation and your strategy for the negotiation.)
