"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." That is what Teddy Roosevelt said once. We learned a lot on this adventure. For me it was a life lesson. It changed the way I look at the world now. People can be nuisances, but they can also help change the world for the better.
One thing I learned is that the marches can feed off some of the construction that we had made on the 9th Street Bridge in Ocean City. The bridge can serve as nests for some of the birds. The marches are major mating grounds for some of the coolest birds around. One of these birds that rely on the march is the Black Backed Gull. This bird is the biggest Sea Gull. We learned that it can eat a large fish whole. It nests in the marches every year. This bird dominates Bird Island. Another bird that relies on the marches is the Laughing Gull. We saw that this bird nests on top of the marsh grass.
Another thing I learned on my adventure is that the trees are relied heavily on. Trees make oxygen for us humans, but they can also become homes for wildlife like chipmunks and birds like woodpeckers. Some animals need high places to nest and to escape danger. When people knock down trees, it's not always a bad thing. Bugs and insects can use the dead tree to colonize. Snakes can also use it to shade themselves from the suns UV rays. Another interesting thing is that NJ is known for its Pine Barrens. So when it rains, the water goes into the ground and the trees suck up all the bad things. So when we get the water it is nice and fresh, clean of any harmful bacteria. That's why NJ has great water compared to other places like FL.
The 3rd thing I learned is that you have to enjoy the little things. When we went kayaking in Mays Landing, we really did see anything in the water. But again enjoy the little things. We didn't see anything in the water because the water was stained by the cedar trees. The cedar bark made the water turn murky. Another thing was all these spiders that freaked me out. We didn't know what kind they were but the seemed to prefer to live on the cedar trees. They were kind of big but they had these long front legs. If you pissed them of they would bite you, but they never bit me because I hit them with my paddle. But it was a good trip, even though it took us 4 hours, in blistering heat!
All in all I enjoyed my trip. If had a good time with all the activities. Teddy Roosevelt was right, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." We can destroy the earth with all needs, but some of activates we do are not necessarily bad.
