Bi polar disorder is a medical condition in which individual's goes back and forth between periods of good moods, bad moods, and depression. The mood swings that one experiences between mania and depression can be in a very quick fashion.

Bi polar disorder can articulate itself in a variety of different ways. One of the most recognized set of symptoms of this disorder is called emotional pain, which is the sadness, guilt, helplessness, and other feelings that contribute to the misery of depression.

Bi polar disorder is defined as having one or more manic episodes possibly cycling with major depressive episodes. The manic episodes can be times of exceedingly happy or petulance, that in addition to those symptoms must have the following: elaborateness, decreased need for sleep, increased chattiness, racing thoughts, distractibility, increase in goal-directed activity or psychomotor disturbance, and excessive involvement in pleasure seeking or risky activities.

Bi polar disorder is a disruptive, long term psychological condition, but an individual can keep their moods in check by following a treatment plan. In many cases, bi polar disorder can be controlled by medicines and psychological counseling or psychotherapy. (Mayo Clinic, 2012).

The symptoms that are laid out for bi polar disorder are not universal symptoms, but can vary from individual to individual. In some cases, depression causes the major problems, and for others the manic symptoms are the main problem. Sometimes, the symptoms of depression and the symptoms of mania can occur together, and this is known to be as a mixed episode.

Bi polar disorder is being diagnosed in children and teenagers at high rate more than in adults. In the past ten years, there has been a fifty percent raise in the numbers of children and teenagers who are being diagnosed with bi polar disorder. The occurrence of bi polar disorder in the universal inhabitants is projected to around 1.5 percent which is showing that this disorder affects men and women uniformly.

The main apprehension is the fact that still remains is a somber debate over treatments of bi polar disorder and even in the diagnosis of this disorder in children and teenagers. The main issue that lies in diagnosing children and teenagers with bi polar disorder is that as the definition of bi polar disorder in the DSM-IV TR is actually written to describe bi polar disorder in adults, making is hard to know how and if a child should really be diagnosed with having bi polar disorder. The cause of bi polar disorder is not exactly precise nor do the experts really know what really causes one to have bi polar disorder.
