Based on what I have read and understand, the Quest for Excellence in Management emphasizes on the effective and proper managing of people in any business and organization. The top management position must not focus only on the business itself alone but must include managing their workforce effectively as employees are now seen as people seeking to fulfill not only their basic physiological needs and security but the higher needs of affiliation, self-esteem, recognition, advancement, and self-actualization.
Several factors have brought in need of manpower management like the invention of machines during the industrial revolution, fast changes in technology and competition in business. As a result, employers need to hire more workers to operate things. Managing workforce more effectively however started with the development of scientific management, studies on behavioral science and enactment of labor laws which gave importance to the workers. These developments helped business owners to realize that they have to make their employees satisfied with their jobs by proper wages and benefits, and a good working environment which in turn improved the quality of work and production of goods. This improvements was supported by the concept of Quality Circles that monitors the process, procedures and records of each activity in a manufacturing setup. A clear and a strong evidence that active participation and support of top management to the workers will have a positive impact in the industry.
However, a specific question came up, "where have we been failing and why?". The identified reason and above all is the the complexity of human nature. We humans have the most highly developed social structure and most of our nature, our personality, involves interpersonal relationships. Although human functions are same, still there is big difference when it comes to our characteristics. As stated, each one of us has its own unique trait, different strengths and weaknesses and different perceptions. One person cannot compare to another.
The answer to this problem lies not only to control their environment but also one's own basic traits. This means developing self awareness. we must develop self awareness to able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind. Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions. Self awareness is one of the attributes of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success. Human must have clear perception of their personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. We might quickly assume that we are self aware, but it is helpful to have a relative scale for awareness. With practice we can learn to engage things and see the new opportunities for interpretations
