The advantage of lectures
In fact, compared with little discussion classes, the lectures have many advantages either. For example, Lectures can be specifically organized to meet the needs of particular audiences and present large amounts of information. What's more, to the lecturers, they can model how professionals work through disciplinary questions or problems and communicate the intrinsic interest of a subject through their enthusiasm.
Lectures, especially in China, can provide knowledge and information for more students with less instructional resources. As China nowadays, having copied the US policy, lowering the threshold of universities admissions, there are too many students because of the large population while the number of teachers is so limited. For example, in our college, every students need to learn the course of Marxist philosophy. However, only five or six teachers are prepared for more than ten thousands students. If the teachers must give little discussion classes rather than big lectures, it's really impossible missions. While the same course content can be taught to all the students at once time in lectures. Compared with small classes, the lecture is obviously more efficient.
Besides, large lectures can boost both the teachers and students' enthusiasm. We can imagine that how a lecturer reacts differently in front of twenty students and two hundred students. Of course, everyone would like to try their best to perform for more audience. The teachers' enthusiasm must influence their students and the more students can provide the better study academic atmosphere. No doubt it is beneficial for us students.
After all, every coin has two sides, no matter the big lectures or the small discussion classes both have their advantages and disadvantages. They are both indispensable in our university courses. The point is that we should grasp their advantages and let the knowledge be ours.
