ABSTRACT

Reverse engineering plays vital role in the branch of the mechanical design and manufacturing based industry. This technique has been widely recognized as an important technique in the product design cycle. In regular computerized manufacturing environment, the operation order usually starts from the product design and ends with machine operation to convert raw material into final product. It is often essential to reproduce a CAD model of existing part using any digitization techniques, when original drawings or documentation are not available and used for analysis and modifications are required to construct a improved product design. In reverse engineering approach the important steps involved, are characterizations of geometric models and related surface representations, segmentation and surface fitting of simple and free-form shapes, and creating accurate CAD models.

Some of the chess pieces are broken and lost. The chess pieces cannot buy only one piece to replace the lost or broken chess pieces. Due to that, it is very difficult to get one piece of chess from shop since we have to buy one of the chess set.

Rapid prototyping technique has been chosen to produce the new chess pieces. We decided to design our own CAD model of those chess piece based on the real model of the parts. But, the dimensions will be scaled to smaller measurements. We had come out this idea because we found out that many users often lost the chess pieces and hardly got a replacement for the certain pieces. Therefore, we stand out and help the people to solve the issues.

The technique used here will be Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). This is because the chess pieces are not very complex in geometry and the size of the model is small enough to process. It is fairly fast to print the small parts. FDM also helps to produce the minimal wastage and ease in removal of support structure. The parts will be looked decent as its surface finish is much better. Rapid prototyping is a well-deserved process for the contribution of the lost chess pieces in the board game.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rapid prototyping is a fabrication process that is used to make the engineering prototypes in a minimum lead time based on CAD model of certain products. It produces physical objects layer-by-layer directly from computer-aided design (CAD) data. These techniques allow designers to produce tangible prototypes of their designs quickly. As a result, a part can be done in hours or days when the computer model of a part has been generated on a CAD system.

In this project, we are going to solve the problems in the application of our daily life. After discussion among group members, we had reached a consensus which is the solution for the problem of the lost chess piece.
