Response Paper to Supplemental Film: Pulp Fiction

Pulp fiction is a award winning movie by the famous director Quentin Tatantino. It stars Uma Truman, John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson as a few of the main stars. This movie is directed in a unique and highly stylized manner with an intersection plot broken down into four stories. It is a mix of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players and small time crooks trying to find a living in the crime world. The entire movie is focused on one briefcase that needs to be delivered to the boss by Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson). This movie created a comic book/short story like image in my mind making me feel like a part of the movie. Through the four stories regarding the two mobsters, the gangster's wife, a boxer and a pair of dinner bandits the audience is pulled into the main action making them feel a part of everything in the movie and relating to the four tales of violence and redemption.

The scene that made me feel a part of the movie the most was the one with the dinner bandits Hunny Bunny and Pumpkin. In this scene we see the two trying to rob everyone in the diner after their meal trying to make some money. At this point they come in contact with the two mobsters Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield. They try to rob them not knowing that they are two of the biggest mobsters in Los Angeles. They end up taking the situation in their hands and return the money of all the other customers leaving as heroes. This shows that even though they are mobsters they care about the greater good of society and feel a part of it. This scene made me feel like a part of the restaurant crowd as the auditory and visual imagery along with the atmosphere of suspense drags the viewer directly into the middle of the action. This movie kept me completely focused and a part of the movie from start to end keeping me both entertained and at my feet wanting more. The unique direction style of Quentin Tatantino is a major part of this feeling as he understands the needs of his audience and delivers a great movie every time. his unique way of cutting the movie into parts keeps the attention of the audience on the movie making them feel like a character in it. The fact that it is broke down into parts gives the audience a few seconds of rest as they are plunged into yet another mind boggling and exciting experience as can be seen even in Pulp Fiction. It is one of the biggest successes of 1994 as it not only was nominated 7 times but also won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival which is the most prestigious award given to a film. This shows that this movie not only makes the audience feel like a vital character or spectator throughout the entire movie but also makes them feel entertained and wanting more even at the end.
