Functions of Management
"Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals" (Bateman & Snell, 2009). There are four functions that any manager should perform to ensure business success. These functions are: planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
Planning is the first step in any management process. A manager must determine what goals the organization has and what needs to be done to achieve these goals. Setting certain objectives and following up on the completion of the plan are key components in the planning function.
The organizing function includes the organization of people and resources within a company. Managers need to assure that there is enough available resources to carry out specific plans. Organizing develops the structure of an organization and establishes communication patterns and networks. "Organizing involves the assignment of tasks, the grouping of tasks into departments, and the allocation of resources to departments" (Daft, 2007).
Leading consists of motivating and influencing employees and forming effective groups. Motivating employees is the key to the leadership function. Leaders should communicate openly with employees. Communication also includes listening to employees when they speak or have opinions. The leading function helps the organization move forward to attain goals.
