Abstract:

In the electrical lab, two demonstrations were carried out that demonstrated how electrical engineering affects the real world. The first one explained the principle of induction motors and its applications in the real world. The instructor connected the stator to a 3-phase power supplier which caused the stator to induce a current on the rail and move in one direction. When the instructor changed the phases, the rail created an opposing magnetic field reflecting the stator and resulted in the stator moving in the opposite direction. Furthermore, the second demonstration, titled “How automatic assembly and sorting work in a production line”, consisted of a system containing, conveyor belts, sorting boxes, solenoids, and sensors all connected to a device called the PLC (programmable logic controller). In sum, both demonstrations successfully explained the phenomena of linear induction motors and factory product lines, it gave us a good understanding of how electrical engineering can benefit our real world.

Background

LIM (Linear Induction Motor):

A linear induction motors (LIM) are capable of high speeds (AUS, 2016) and they are designed to produce straight motion in a straight line. LIM consists of two fundamental parts, firstly, the stator, which is a movable vehicle and the second part is a stationary aluminum rail. The movable vehicle is comprised of a three-legged iron core; each leg being wrapped with coils which are connected to a 3 phase alternating correct (AC) power source. The stator was located directly above the railing. [pic 2]

Practical uses of LIM:

  • Railway carriages
  • Conveyor belts
  • Automatic sliding doors

To conclude LIM’s are straightforward and simple to utilize. They have many practical uses and is just one example of how electrical engineering can benefit society.

Automatic Assembly and Sorting in Factory Production Line:

The Industrial Control Trainer (ICT) (AUS, 2016) is a representation of a real world factory assembly line. It consists of conveyor belts, electronic sensors and actuators “kickers”.

The procedure is controlled by a device called PLC; this device controls every single distinctive operation from sorting to gathering by receiving signals from the electronic sensors and then sending signals to the actuators.
