FedEx HISTORY

FedEx Express originally known as FDX Corporation is a logistic service that provides expedited shipping for freight, packages, and other documents. The company was started by Frederick W. Smith, he wrote how shippers, should and need to have a system designed specifically for airfreight and cargo that could accommodate time sensitive shipments, for example medicines, documents, auto parts, and various electronics. Business started to boom in the 1980s, Federal Express became very established. Federal Express (now known as FedEx) gained many competitors such as Airborne Express, UPS, and DHL.

They were trying to catch up to a company whose growth rate came in at about 40 percent yearly. In 1983 FedEx Express reported $1 billion in revenues making the American business history as the first company to make it to the financial hallmark inside 10 years of start-up without any mergers or acquisitions. The company also came the world's largest full service all cargo airline due to the Flying Tigers network on August 7, 1989. Later on in years 1995 FedEx gained authority to serve China through an acquisition from Evergreen International Airlines.

Since then the company has expanded. Federal Express began to expand by buying into different organizations such as RPS (Roadway Package system in 1996, and then formed FedEx Ground. By 1996 FedEx offered 100 percent coverage of North America. FedEx gained so many acquisitions FedEx Freight became the leading provider in the U.S. of next and second day. As of today FedEx Services coordinates sales, marketing, information technology, customer service, and worldwide supply of chain services supports for the FedEx brands.

FedEx signed more and more acquisitions just to name a few they bought into Kinkos, which branched off to a division which is now known as FedEx Kinkos and FedEx Office. FedEx Corporation is also involved in many charity events and community services. FedEx makes many contributions to The United Way; they even give the employees a chance to donate. They have participated in the Toys for Tots Fund, and the donation of can goods for the less fortunate. FedEx is rated 20 in The Best 25 Companies to Work for in America.

FedEx Corporation will produce superior financial returns for its shareowners by providing high value-added logistics, transportation and related business services through focused operating companies. Customer requirements will be met in the highest quality manner appropriate to each market segment served. FedEx will strive to develop mutually rewarding relationships with its employees, partners and suppliers. Safety will be the first consideration in all operations. Corporate activities will be conducted to the highest ethical and professional standards.

FedEx has two major strengths, one is their strong brand image, and another is their cutting edge technology and innovation. FedEx's strong brand image is strength because, they are well known. FedEx is internationally known when anyone sees the logo they know what company it belongs to and what they do. FedEx has established several different companies to fit its consumer needs. With this strong brand image and their distinct different companies and services this is one of their distinctive competencies.

Also FedEx uses cutting edge technology to provide customer satisfaction with timely deliveries. FedEx was the first in its industry to use wireless technology to track their packages and provide live online tracking for their customers.
